Checkpoint Charlie: Here, in October 1961, the entire world looked to this site where the distance between war and peace was less than twenty meters. For two days the world held its breath as it looked to this spot in downtown Berlin where Soviet and American tanks stood face to face for the first time after the Second World War….Until 1990, Checkpoint Charlie was the only crossing point for foreigners between East and West Berlin.
